This blog came about when one of my customers asked me whether there was any point keeping her website going. She didn’t seem to get much traffic to it so should she concentrate on social media instead?
Her business is very niche and very visual so she’ll probably get more from clients following her on Instagram or Facebook.
Even though most of her business will be through social media, there are very good reasons why it’s still worth keeping a website online. Whatever your business.

Two things have prompted the idea for this blog, both different but both related.
The first is the fact that I’m on maternity, I’ve added to my brood and I need a business that fits my changed circumstances. I need my business to be easy to run.
The other is my ‘word of the year’, I chose Simplify. My house started to overflow with stuff and I got tired of searching for stuff and tripping over stuff. Stuff I don’t actually need or even want.
As I’ve been sorting through the house, I’ve been going through my office, and it clicked that I needed to simplify my business too. Much of what I’ve been doing in my home life also applies to my business life.

January is that time of year when most of us get all fired up about our businesses (new year, new you and all that) so it’s a great time to use all that positive energy and plan some marketing for this month and beyond.
Some of us might be busy this month (yay for you!), for some of us January is the yearly drought. Either way, our customers are still out there. They might be ready to buy or they might be planning what they want to buy as soon as that wage hits their bank account.
So create a marketing campaign for January that gets your business seen – send out a newsletter, plan your social media, try a different marketing tactic.

Every year, as we dip towards Winter with its longer, darkening evenings and the ending off the old year, I feel the urge to discard things I no longer find useful or have never been needed in my home and life.
The declutter bug comes nudging.
And never more is it needed than in my office space where office clutter and business stuff just seems to grow and multiply. I’ve been inspired by the lovely Hazel Dow from Freespace to write a blog about decluttering your office space and making it a beautiful and healthy space to work in.

You’re only a small business, you’re self employed, your desk is the kitchen table. So why on earth would you bother with brand guidelines? That’s just for big, corporate companies, isn’t it? Little old you doesn’t need fancy brand style guide.
Well, for a start, don’t knock your small business (Steve Jobs started in his parents garage). But more importantly, you have a brand whether you know it or not.
Your logo is the visual identity of your business, it’s how your customer recognises you. Your brand is how your customer feels about your business, and this encompasses every thing you do in print and online. So whether you’re bothered about branding or not, your customer is out there seeing and reading everything you put out there and forming an opinion.
Now, it’s starting to look more important. Good, because I’m going to help you put together some simple guidelines which you can refer to regularly (and update if you need to) and these will be the foundation of every contact you have with your customers, and your potential customers.
